Success Story: Transforming SD’s Capital City into a Healthy Hometown

As one of the oldest cities in the state, Pierre, SD, knows the challenges of an aging infrastructure. However, funding critical improvements safety and walkability can be… well… challenging.

In 2019, the City of Pierre partnered with multiple public and private entities to focus on making pedestrian safety a priority by working on improved sidewalk standards and repairing or replacing more than 2,700 feet of sidewalk in the community. The city also worked with partners to create accessible playgrounds and a new garden.

The city’s efforts earned Pierre recognition with a 2019 Healthy Hometown Powered by Wellmark Community Award.
