Success Story: Yankton Dives In to Support New Public Pool
Memorial Park Pool in Yankton was built in 1947, and although it had been renovated and updated four times over the years, a 2001 study found that “Your existing pool has lived longer than expected and needs replacement. It usually takes approximately three years minimum to go through the process of replacing a facility of this size. You will need to expend funds annually to keep the pool up and running, but we would advise not to do any major renovation to your existing facility."
A task force of community volunteers came together to review the issue and bring a recommendation to the City Commission. Once a final design was selected, the next step was fundraising. Dive In Yankton was formed as a community effort to raise the funds needed to build the new aquatic facility. The grassroots, volunteer-led effort raised $2.4 million to fund the project.
