Success Story: Rethinking Britton‘s Park Complex
Earlier this year, the City of Britton, South Dakota (pop. 1,300) partnered with local architecture/engineering firm ISG, to create a comprehensive master plan for a 37 acre outdoor, active lifestyle park, located in an area on the south side of town.
The site was already home to three baseball/softball fields which are a popular destination for residents and visitors alike. During the busy spring and summer months, it’s possible to catch a game or practice most every day of the week.
The success of the baseball/softball programs made the addition of a fourth ball field a given, but a community task force formed to create a long-term vision for the park wanted to ensure the site could appeal to all demographics and recreation interests in the community, while also enhancing and protecting the natural environment which includes a large wetlands area.
Central to the site master plan was pedestrian circulation. Intuitive trail and sidewalk connections are featured throughout the site providing efficient access to ball fields, concession stands, and practice areas. But the extensive trail network extends well beyond spectator areas, connecting visitors to other points of interest including an outdoor fitness equipment area, a community garden/orchard, children’s play area, and multi-purpose football/soccer practice field.
Other outdoor and mental health activities were also important considerations, particularly with the Marshall County Health Center only a five minute walk from the park. Future visitors will find a rolling, bermed, native prairie planting area designed to establish a natural buffer from the more hustle-bustle sections of the park, creating a secluded area of respite. It is here where visitors can enjoy bird and other wildlife spotting from a number of strategically placed viewing stations, learn about the natural environment via educational signage, or meditate in the solitude of their own hammock perched upon one of several hammocking stations throughout the park.
Britton’s deliberate approach to park master planning which promotes livability will create better social connections, new recreational possibilities, and learning opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and income levels.
